چکیده

Robot Hardware The bipedal robot ATRIAS has been developed for efficient and versatile locomotion. Its design was inspired by the spring-mass model, which has been proposed as a template for hopping, running and walking [1, 2]. The 60kg robot walks on two legs of 0.9m maximum length which are driven by two motors each, sharing the load of extending and rotating the leg. A carbon-fiber leaf spring connects the motor output to the leg, allowing to control the applied leg force. Each leg can be abducted by an additional motor [3].

Robotic spring-mass walkers – potential and limitations

As spring-like leg behaviour in human running was observed in a number of studies [1] the spring loaded inverted pendulum (SLIP) model was initially proposed as a template model for running and hopping [2]. Based on the model behaviour a number of predictions were made concerning the ability to reproduce dynamics of walking gaits [3], stability measures and stabilisation strategies [4] as well ...

ATRIAS: Design and validation of a tether-free 3D-capable spring-mass bipedal robot

ATRIAS is a human-scale 3D-capable bipedal robot designed to mechanically embody the spring-mass model for dynamic walking and running. To help bring the extensive work on this theoretical model further into practice, we present the design and validation of a spring-mass robot that can operate in real-world settings (i.e. off-tether and without planarizing restraints). We outline the mechanisms...

Spring-mass Walking with Atrias in 3d: Robust Gait Control Spanning Zero to 4.3 Kph on a Heavily Underactuated Bipedal Robot

We present a reduced-order approach for robust, dynamic, and efficient bipedal locomotion control, culminating in 3D balancing and walking with ATRIAS, a heavily underactuated legged robot. These results are a development toward solving a number of enduring challenges in bipedal locomotion: achieving robust 3D gaits at various speeds and transitioning between them, all while minimally draining ...

Performance Analysis and Feedback Control of ATRIAS, A 3D Bipedal Robot

This paper develops feedback controllers for walking in 3D, on level ground, with energy efficiency as the performance objective. ATRIAS 2.1 is a new robot that has been designed for the study of 3D bipedal locomotion, with the aim of combining energy efficiency, speed, and robustness with respect to natural terrain variations in a single platform. The robot is highly underactuated, having 6 ac...

Multi-contact bipedal robotic locomotion

This paper presents a formal framework for achieving multi-contact bipedal robotic walking, and realizes this methodology experimentally on two robotic platforms: AMBER2 and ATRIAS. Inspired by the key feature encoded in human walking— multi-contact behavior—this approach begins with the analysis of human locomotion and uses it to motivate the construction of a hybrid system model representing ...
